Just because you answer a collection call … it doesn’t mean you have to take the abuse.

After witnessing first hand the abusive tactics many collection agencies use when making debt collection calls, this site has been created by people who are fed up with these practices. Our goal is to be the number one resource for everyone when it comes to dealing with collection agencies. This website is actually an open-source, FREE informational directory designed to completely and truthfully educate you on the entire debt collection process. The goal is dispel the myths that debt collectors or collection agencies use to harass and degrade you into paying a debt.

So you got a debt collection call … now what? First, don’t panic. Nearly everything the debt collector says is a lie. They are not going to have you arrested, take you to jail, or burn down your house. Likely, they even lied about their name. That’s why we are here. This site is designed to help good people in a bad situation. It is designed to tell you the truth about what to expect and take the panic out of the debt collection experience.

Next, realize that the goal of a debt collection call is to manipulate your emotions. The debt collector wants you to feel either anger or fear, they don’t care which. Why? Studies show if during a debt collection call the caller makes you feel either anger or fear, you will pay the debt without thinking about your other obligations. It’s manipulation pure and simple.

Some of the more unscrupulous collection agencies will resort to high pressure or scare tactics to convince you to pay the amount they say you owe upfront, the first time they call. They’ll claim to be working in your best interest, try to become your friend, and then offer suggestions on how you can pay the debt. Some of them will attempt to get payment by an electronic check or credit card. NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR ACCOUNT INFORMATION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

You do have recourse and should know how to stop these harassing debt collection calls. As a consumer, you need to know what your legal rights are. The Federal Trade Commission handles complaints about harassment and has laws in place about eliminating harassing collection calls. Debtors can’t call you at your place of business. They can’t call you before 8 in the morning or after 9 at night. They aren’t allowed to add charges that aren’t authorized by you personally. They aren’t allowed to call anyone in your family or your friends, to collect money that you owe. They can’t harass you or be abusive.

Getting Legal Advice. Debt collectors assume that you do not have a lawyer available to tell you about your rights. For most people this is true. But you are not most people. Before you do anything, we highly recommend consulting an attorney first. Don’t have an attorney or think you can’t afford to speak with one? No Problem! There is a nationwide company that we HIGHLY recommend called Prepaid Legal Services. Their basic legal plan can give you unlimited telephone consultations with a licensed attorney in your state for less than $30 a month, on a month-to-month-basis.
